FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are the dietary values?
All our wines are roughly only one third of the calories of wines with alcohol. They do differ slightly from wine to wine, with the range across the board going from 28 to 38 calories for 25cl. There is about 5 grams carb per 100ml, but no fat and no protein. They are also vegetarian and vegan.

How is the alcohol removed?
The Steam Vacuum is the pioneer de-alcoholising process, which was patented in 1904. The vaporisation temperature of alcohol is lower than that of a water-based liquid, such as wine. The temperature at which liquids will give off vapour (boil) is dependent on the atmospheric pressure. The lower the pressure, the lower the temperature needed for vaporisation. Therefore, a wine in a vacuum, which has NO pressure, will yield its alcohol in a vapour at a very low temperature, thereby losing its alcohol, while retaining the characteristics and flavours that would be harmed by normal boiling.
All the wines are normal alcoholic wines up to the bottling process, so all the original characteristics are still held. Alcohol does, however, affect HOW we taste, but not WHAT we taste, so its removal will produce a slightly different portrait of what we are consuming. ‘Full bodied’ for instance is believed to be what a wine tastes like, but this is entirely wrong! Alcohol provides the ‘body’ and so more alcohol means more body. Alcohol also provides a texture, so its removal is rather like extracting a glycerine component; its texture changes, but its true taste does not. Hundreds of blind tasting have shown that trying a de-alcoholised wine produces a psychological barrier that generates an automatic negative response to having no alcohol, as opposed to a true evaluation of the products for what they are…wines without alcohol and an alternative, rather than a direct substitute for alcoholic wine.

Non-Alcoholic Wines Health Benefits

In today´s health-conscious world, there has been a dramatic decrease in alcohol consumption, and our wines appeal to the wine drinker who appreciates the taste and full complexity of premium wines, but is searching for a non-alcoholic alternative as a safe and comparable lifestyle choice.

Our wines are not only de-alcoholised, but non-fat, and contain 3 times fewer calories than traditional wines. For those following the Atkins Diet, this translates to below 30 calories for 25cl, compared to the average of 120 calories for alcoholic wines. Dieters, designated drivers, expectant mothers and the alcohol-restricted alike can enjoy our wines as an excellent companion with meals, in cooking, and at business events and social occasions.

There are many health benefits for drinking non-alcoholic wines:
There are numerous web sites one could go to where you can read papers from qualified health professionals around the world, each will tell you that there is indeed many benefits from drinking a glass of wine or two per day, and they will quote the ‘French paradox’ The French diet is not all too different than most Western diets yet (according to Serge Renaud, university of Bordeaux) the French have a 35% less rate of cardiovascular disease; and an 18-24% reduction in death rates from cancer.

Heart Disease: In the past decade there have been scores of reports in medical journals around the world detailing the benefits of wine consumption for decreasing heart disease. Studies on heart disease rates in 21 countries founded that the more wine a country drank, the fewer heart disease deaths it reported.

Cholesterol: Scientists have identified another group of chemicals in red wine that is linked to the ability to lower cholesterol. Called saponins, these glucose-based plant compounds are being found in an increasing number of foods. It is a scientific fact that red wine has Polyphenols. Polyphenols in general are found to lower cholesterol, and improve the ratio of LDL to HDL cholesterol. They lower blood pressure, lessen risks of cancer, stimulate the immune system and have antibacterial properties. Wine also contains resveratrol, for which number of beneficial health effects, such as anti-cancer, antiviral, neuroprotective, anti-aging, anti-inflammatory and life-prolonging effects have been reported by scientists. The red grapes that go into red wine also have bioflavonoids, which are antioxidants and help prevent cancer to begin.

What does wine do? Wine alters the blood lipid levels. It lowers the total cholesterol count and raises the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels. In simple terms, it keeps the blood vessels clean. In fact, the Polyphenols help keep the arteries clear from plaque invasion.
Alcoholic wine is processed through the body very quickly whereas the Polyphenols in de-alcoholised or wine with the alcohol removed goes on working longer.

Strokes: A 16-year study of 13,000 people in Denmark by Institute of Preventive Medicine has found that a daily glass of wine may significantly reduce the risk of stroke. The researchers noted that those who drank roughly one glass of wine daily — red or white — had a 32-percent reduction in their risk of stroke. The same was not true of beer or liquor drinkers.

Remember that de-alcoholised wine:

• Lowers cholesterol levels
• Helps the fight against heart disease
• Less than half the calories compared to alcoholic wine
• Great for weight watchers
• Beneficial in inhibiting arteriosclerosis
• Clinical research indicates it lowers the risk of cancer
• Can be enjoyed by the whole family

• Abstainers
• Calorie Counters
• Designated Drivers

Myths and Misconceptions
As is common with new products, there are several myths surrounding alcohol-free wines.

Myth - "Alcohol-Free Wines Taste Like Grape Juice"

The myth is that once the alcohol is removed so is the taste! Remember what we said above, that taste was the main reason that 85% of the people surveyed stated that this was the reason they drank wine. If this was the case, then we would be wasting your time and our money trying to convince you to buy our products. It is a misconception that de-alcoholised wine does not taste as good. The traditional wine drinkers that have tried our many products have been most impressed with the taste in fact pleasantly surprised.

Myth - "Alcohol-Free Wines Don´t Provide the Same Health Benefits"
There have been a number of studies linking reduced instances of heart disease in individuals who regularly consume wine. Alcohol-free wines provide these same benefits because the ingredients contributing to this effect are retained in the de-alcoholisation process.
Our wines are made from the same process as regular wine, only with the alcohol removed. Our wines are not fruit juices!
Our wines provide the consumer with a sophisticated alternative to regular wine and are ideal for the growing number of consumers who want the taste of wine but do not want the effects of alcohol.
Hosts show their respect to those who choose not to drink alcoholic beverages, such as designated drivers, pregnant women, diabetics and those who abstain from alcohol by choice. By offering a tasty non-alcoholic wine, good hosts allow all to participate in the festivities!

Enjoy!
